The Southern Rough-winged Swallow is generally greyish-brown on its upperparts. It has a cinnamon throat above generally greyish brown underparts except for pale yellow on the belly and undertail coverts.

It does in fact have a "rough wing" with the outer edge of the outer primary having a serrated edge.
